We make one of the products on this list (CloudBay AI Front Desk). We've tried to give every other tool fair credit using its own published pricing and descriptions, and we link every price to its source so you can check it yourself.
Quick answer
There isn't one best AI receptionist. There's a best fit for how many calls you get and how much setup you want to do yourself.
- Lowest entry price, you set it up: Dialzara, Rosie, Upfirst.
- Predictable bill when call volume swings: NextPhone (flat, unlimited inbound calls) or Goodcall (billed by unique customers, not minutes).
- AI with an established answering brand behind it: Smith.ai.
- All-in-one front office (voice, chat, SMS, CRM): My AI Front Desk.
- Done for you by a team that also handles your website and Google presence: CloudBay AI Front Desk.
Start here: the four ways AI receptionists charge
Most of the price confusion comes from four different meters. Know which one you're on before you compare numbers.
- Per call. You pay for a set number of calls, then a per-call overage. Good when calls are short and steady. Examples: Smith.ai, Upfirst, CloudBay.
- Per minute. You buy talk time. Cheap for quick calls, expensive if callers ramble. Examples: Dialzara, Rosie, My AI Front Desk.
- Per unique customer. Repeat callers don't count twice. Good if the same customers call you often. Example: Goodcall.
- Flat. One monthly price with unlimited inbound calls. Easiest to budget. Example: NextPhone.

How to pick in five minutes
Answer these three questions and most of the list drops away.
- How many calls do you get in a normal month? Pull it from your phone bill or carrier app. Under 50, a per-minute or small per-call plan is usually cheapest. Several hundred, compare flat and per-call allowances side by side.
- Who will set it up and keep it current? If you'll write the prompts and update them when your hours or prices change, a self-serve tool is fine. If you won't, pay for done-for-you, or the AI will drift out of date.
- What happens after the call? Ask each vendor exactly where the message goes (text, email, CRM) and how fast. A perfectly answered call that nobody follows up is still a lost job.
When CloudBay is not the right pick
- You get a handful of calls a month and just want something cheap answering after hours. A low-tier per-minute or per-call tool will cost less.
- You want to build and tweak the AI yourself every week. Self-serve tools give you more direct control.
- You need live humans on every call. Look at human answering services (Smith.ai sells both).
FAQ
What is the best AI receptionist for a small business? The one whose billing matches your call pattern and whose setup matches your time. Flat or per-customer pricing suits busy, repeat-caller lines. Per-minute suits low volume. Done-for-you suits owners who won't maintain it themselves.
How much does an AI receptionist cost for a small business? Published plans on this page run from $24.95/mo (Upfirst Starter) to several hundred a month, plus custom enterprise tiers. Compare the meter (calls, minutes, customers or flat), not just the headline price.
Do AI receptionists charge per minute or per call? Both exist, plus per-unique-customer and flat plans. Check the overage rate before you sign, since that's where bills grow.
Is My AI Front Desk the same as CloudBay AI Front Desk? No. They're separate companies with different products and pricing.
Can I try an AI receptionist before paying? Several tools on this list advertise free plans or trials (Smith.ai Free, Goodcall's demo agent, My AI Front Desk, Rosie and Upfirst trials). CloudBay offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on the first month from go-live.
